The girls family meeting her new husbands family for the first time. Should this even be allwed? Why does the girls family have to give her new husbands family money?

This video is really funny. Its about a girl whose parents pick a guy for her to marry,
but the guy is a nerd so she uses this remote she has to change the guy into all
these different other guys. She finally picks a guy at the end who she likes and wants
to marry.

Some questions i have about my topic:

  • What happens Arranged Marriage is rejected in India?
  • Why does the females family have to pay their "soon to be husband" money?
  • Is arranged marriage good or bad?

This little child bride is way to young to marry i think. I would say she is about 5 or 6 years old.

The Pro's & Con's of Arranged Marriages.. And what i already know about Arranged Marriages ! :)

What I already know :

  • An Arranged Marriage in India was seen as a way of promoting caste system or racism.
  • It was just a tool for the upper caste people to protect their community and to maintain their social status.
  • They married their children to the person of the same caste or same social background.
  • Child marriage was essentially performed, so as to restrict the children from marrying outside their community and social status.
  • The rituals and customs of arrange marriages in India vary depending on the caste and religion of the people.
  • The wifes family has to pay money to the husbands family after they get married.
  • If the wife refuses to pay bad things could happen to her like:
  1. "Accidental" death etc.

Here is a link to a website called 60 Minutes about a girl named Nisha Sharma who refused to pay her husbands family money. This story is about what happened in the relationship and what happened to her.

Pro's of Arranged Marriages:

  • One of the positive aspects about arranged marriages is that it gives the parents utmost control over family matters and members. Since they are the ones who would decide on the prospective bride and groom, they would get someone, who is the best for their son/daughter.
  • The only way an arranged marriage can succeed is through acceptance. One has to accept the other the way he/she is and look for striking a mutual level of understanding.

  • Good arrange marriages happen when the parents support and help their children to find their life partners according to their desires and likings.
Con's of Arranged Marriages:
  • Arranged marriages are seen as a medium to promote racism and class system.
  • While the above negative aspects can still be dealt with, one of the most crucial drawbacks of arranged marriage is that the boy and the girl do not know each other.
  • Two unknown people get married without knowing and understanding each other, as according to the concept, it is not important to know your partner before marriage.

Some of this Information i am giving you is from a website called iloveindia.com

Raga music played at some Traditional Arranged Marriage weddings in India

Answer & Question Session:Q: What happens Arranged Marriage is rejected in India?A: If children find their own mates, their parents would threaten them in many ways. One way is by threatening not to give them any share of family property or wealth or also threatening to drive them out of their own homes. Also if any children marry to their own desire, parents would consider it as a threat and shame to the family. So, many men and women just accept what their parents arrange for them. They don't want to lose their share of property, and they don't want to create any shame to their family. Lastly, if they don't like the spouse they get, they accept what they recieve and basically just have to suffer with the consequences (which really stinks).

Tell me more about Fashion Week. Is it the same way as the one in New York City, where the big designers show off their new season's clothing? Where is it held? I look forward to learning more about fashion in India. Also, double check your pictures, because they seem to be doing something funny!

I like the video that you have up. I like the video because since arrange marriages are kind of serious you put a video in it that takes the seriousness off of the page. I also like your pictures. Good job Aryanna.
